Various Artists THE FAITHFUL (A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull). You decide – but it’s my Favourite Song on a very clever and Grown Up set of songs.įollow The Rocking Magpie on Search for: Categories Categories Recent Posts Is it a metaphor for a the last days of a passionate relationship? Is it more local and his observations on the localised political climate? Is it literally about the Wars that are springing up around the world? Then there is the gritty Don’t Start a War very much a ‘song of our times’, with its doom laden arrangement and Alexander’s voice sounding pained and emotional as he tells a tale that can be deciphered on many levels. The finale This Side of The Glass is an honest and brutally honest harmony driven song about heartbreak and a broken heart in the style of Steve Earle or Neil Young but neither can dredge up the pain and heartbreak these days that Alexander manages with consummate ease. If I’ve done my maths correctly, this is John Alexander’s 8th album since 2004, and it appears he’s served a long and globetrotting apprenticeship, playing to audiences the world over which probably explains the way he naturally paints pictures in the listeners’ head with his words and imagery during the deceptively punchy Fault and Blame as well as the smouldering Living To Stay Alive.Īs these are grown up and mature songs, there’s nothing here commercial enough to trouble the Top 40 chart compilers but in some ways that’s a good thing as the target demographic will want to play this album from start to finish in the way the artist has arranged them but a couple of songs really stand out from the crowd. The key to these songs though is Alexander’s incisive and acutely observed songwriting which really comes to the fore with the smoky Last Man Standing and the title track Face The Wind, which has a neat Juke Joint melody and a kick in the teeth chorus. making it accessible for English speaking audiences the world over. Knowing Alexander comes from Glasgow I can hear hints of his accent in the background rasp during the stunning Blood In The Water and Breathe but generally his voice is deep and emotional with no discernible landmarks in it quite International in fact …. What follows is predominantly Americana to my ears but with a healthy dose of Southern Blues, most notably in the stunning guitar playing, and combining the two gives us some really memorable songs like White Noise and Long Way From Gone too. Opening song Bullets in The Rain is mighty impressive straddling the genre defying music we associate with acts like John Prine, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle and the young John Martyn too, as Alexander combines gentle Bluesy licks with an Americana tinted story from a charmingly world weary voice aligned to a sharp and edgy female in the background. He was correct of course and here’s my thoughts on the first one, by Glaswegian singer-songwriter John Alexander. The initial result was the Dardanelles campaign, which ran from February through December 1915. As Enver Paşa's offensive collapsed in January 1915, Jemal Paşa (1872–1922) led a daring but futile attack across the Sinai Desert against the Suez Canal.įrustrated by the stalemate on the Western Front, the British soon turned to the Middle East in hopes of finding a way to break the deadlock from their rapidly growing base in Egypt. A Russian counteroffensive in early 1915 put the Ottoman forces in Anatolia and the Caucasus on the defensive until 1917. His initial gains were offset by the decimation of his best troops in the fighting at Sarikamish and a retreat to Erzurum in northeastern Turkey. In the Caucasus, Enver Paşa led an ambitious but ultimately disastrous winter offensive against the Russians. Before the end of 1914, however, Ottoman forces retook the initiative on two fronts. They declared a protectorate over Egypt and deployed Indian troops to secure Basra and Kurna, which provided a buffer for the strategically vital Abadan oil refinery at the head of the Persian Gulf. The British seized the initiative in the Middle East in late 1914. Though the sultancaliph quickly proclaimed a jihad (a Muslim holy war) against the Entente powers, it had no significant impact on the course of the war in the Middle East or among the Muslim subjects of Britain, France, and Russia. In the event, the Ottoman Turks made good their alliance with Germany and brought the Middle East into the war on October 29, 1914, when their fleet, led by German Admiral Wilhelm Souchon (1864–1946), attacked Sevastopol, a Black Sea port on the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine. Though well aware of these dangers, the French and British were unable to maintain their traditional support of the Ottoman Empire against Russia because they needed Russian support against Germany in Europe. It was also hoped that the Ottoman Empire might provide a base from which to threaten Britain's communications with India via the Suez Canal. With aid and expertise from Germany, Enver and his supporters saw an opportunity to inflict a decisive defeat on Russia and recover the territory and prestige lost during the preceding half century.įrom the German perspective, the Ottoman alliance was intended to distract the Entente powers (Britain, France, and Russia) from the European theater and promote rebellion among their Muslim subjects. Prompted by imperial ambition, awareness of Russian designs on their territory, and the inability of France and Great Britain to provide effective guarantees for their security, a prowar, pro-German cabal within the Ottoman cabinet led by Enver Paşa (1881–1922) signed a secret alliance with imperial Germany on August 2, 1914. War came to the Middle East through Ottoman ambition as much as the imperialism of the great European powers. The war also drew virtually the whole of the Middle East into the imperial embrace of Great Britain and France. It brought the end of the Ottoman Empire and established successor states that are the foundation of the modern Middle East. Viewed from a regional perspective, however, World War I was both a profound human tragedy and an exceedingly important formative episode. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia, 1888–1935) and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), the Middle East was strategically insignificant with respect to the outcome of World War I (1914–1918). With 4K increasingly becoming the standard for both movies and TV series, many of you are likely amassing a whole new collection of Ultra HD Blu-rays. That’s why you’ll want to employ a transcoding program, which will minimize file size and/or play the file on multiple devices. Blu-ray files, in particular, tend to be massive. Still, it may be advisable to convert these files to save space. If those are your primary methods for watching videos from your library, you can stop here. In some cases, you don’t even need to convert this file, as MKV files are compatible with the desktop and mobile versions of VLC, as well as Plex’s media server. This process can take anywhere from two minutes to half an hour depending on your computer’s specs and the size of the file, but when it’s done, you should have an MKV file waiting in the specified folder. Step 6: When you’re all ready to go, hit the Make MKV button on the right. Step 5: Designate an Output Folder where you’d like the file to end up once it’s been ripped. To rip only the movie and not extras or bonus material, select only the movie chapter or segment (usually the longest title or biggest file) and uncheck all the other boxes. Step 4: After you’ve selected your disc, MakeMKV will return a list of chapters and segments that you can rip. Theoretically, this process could also remove copyright protections from a disc, but again, that’s not something we condone or encourage. Enough storage on a hard drive to save ripped files The above-mentioned fish hybrids are seen less frequently. However, in a blazon, the terms hippocamp and hippocampus now refer to the real animal called a seahorse, and the terms seahorse and sea-horse refer to the mythological creature. The mythic hippocampus has been used as a heraldic charge, particularly since the Renaissance, most often in the armorial bearings of people and places with maritime associations. Although similar but not identical to Roman sea-horse images, it is unclear whether this depiction originates from images brought over by the Romans, or had a place in earlier Pictish mythology. The symbolism of the carving (also known as "Pictish Beast") is unknown. The sea-horse also appears in Pictish stone carvings in Scotland. Katharine Shepard found in the theme an Etruscan belief in a sea-voyage to the other world. Hippocampi appear with the first Oriental-phase of Etruscan civilization: they remain a theme in Etruscan tomb wall-paintings and reliefs, where they are sometimes provided with wings, as they are in the Trevi fountain. Poseidon's horses, which were included in the elaborate sculptural program of gilt-bronze and ivory, added by a Roman client to the temple of Poseidon at Corinth, are likely to have been hippocampi the Romanised Greek Pausanias described the rich ensemble in the later 2nd century AD ( Geography of Greece ii.1.7-.8): Likewise, the hippocampus was considered an appropriate decoration for mosaics in Roman thermae or public baths, as at Aquae Sulis modern day Bath in Britannia ( illustration, below). When an earthquake suddenly submerged the city, the temple's bronze Poseidon accompanied by hippocampi continued to snag fishermens' nets. Thus it was natural for a temple at Helike in the coastal plain of Achaea to be dedicated to Poseidon Helikonios, (the Poseidon of Helicon), the sacred spring of Boeotian Helikon. The Greek picture of the natural hydrological cycle did not take into account the condensation of atmospheric water as rain to replenish the water table, but imagined the waters of the sea oozing back landwards through vast underground caverns and aquifers, rising replenished and freshened in springs. The appearance of hippocampi in both freshwater and saltwater is counter-intuitive to a modern audience, though not to an ancient one. Thus hippocampi sport with this god in both ancient depictions and much more modern ones, such as in the waters of the 18th-century Trevi Fountain in Rome surveyed by Neptune from his niche above. This compares to the specifically "two-hoofed" hippocampi of Gaius Valerius Flaccus in his Argonautica: "Orionwhen grasping his father’s reins heaves the sea with the snorting of his two-hooved horses." In Hellenistic and Roman imagery, however, Poseidon (or Roman Neptune) often drives a sea-chariot drawn by hippocampi. In the Iliad, Homer describes Poseidon, who was god of horses ( Poseidon Hippios), earthquakes, and the sea, drawn by "brazen-hoofed" horses over the sea's surface, and Apollonius of Rhodes, being consciously archaic in Argonautica, describes the horse of Poseidon emerging from the sea and galloping away across the Libyan sands. Hippocampus on a mosaic in Roman Britain Greek and Roman Ī gold sea-horse was discovered in a hoard from the kingdom of Lydia in Asia minor, dating to the 6th century BC. Coins of the same period from Byblos show a hippocampus diving under a galley. " From the original Greek, hippokampos latinized as hippocampus ( HIPPOCAMPVS), which in turn was anglicized as " hippocamp," though, the latinized version of the name is arguably more common in the anglophone world.Ĭoins minted at Tyre around the 4th century BC show the patron god Melqart riding on a winged hippocampus and accompanied by dolphins. The term " hippocamp" originally derives from the Greek hippokampos (ἱππόκαμπος), which is a compound word comprised of the Greek words hippos (ἵππος), which means " horse," and kampos (κάμπος), which means " sea monster. 3 Capricornus and related mythical animals.2.5 Medieval and Renaissance, and Modern. Frankly, some things about the endings don't make a lot of sense, but I won't go into that as we would enter spoiler territory. There are three different epilogues depending on a choice at the last moment which isn't influenced by previous in-game decisions. The poor live in fear, superstition, and squalor until they die. The rich receive regular doses of vaccinations in exchange for their unconditional government support. There’s never enough food, water, or vaccine to go around. I don't particularly like adventures which punish you at every turn, but in this case it would have been nice to allow the player to make mistakes and plan poorly, with negative results. The ruling Aristocrats a faceless oligarchy that controls all resources have unchallenged authority. For example, an evasion from a supposedly inescapable prison feels anticlimactic, and so does the revolution which has been building up for the whole game. Shardlight starts strongly and never lost my interest, but the last act is rushed. Add to this a death cult focused on a mysterious masked figure, the Reaper, and you have a compelling premise. The masses live in poverty and are plagued by a deadly epidemic, the Green Lung the ruling Aristocracy hoards the cure and distributes lottery tickets with the chance to win a treatment to those who volunteer for dangerous jobs. Shardlight has an interesting setting, probably inspired by Dishonored: a post-apocalyptic society with a Neo-Victorian style and a strong class division. While overall I enjoyed all these games, I really hope they don't go further in that direction. although the trend seems to be heading towards easier solutions: compare the Blackwell series to Shardlight, Unavowed and Lamplight City. I like Wadjet Eye games: they scratch my itch for old-school point-and-click adventures with pleasant retro graphics, competent writing and puzzles which are neither frustrating (no pixel-hunting, for example) nor so easy they become pointless.
